‘Tis the season to worry about heat stress prevention and Mallory Safety & Supply is ready with great tools and information to keep your employees safe.
The temperature is heating up, the job site is getting warmer, and the dangers of overheating are increasing. Be aware that risk levels increase greatly when the heat index reaches 91 degrees.
Summer outdoor work offers plenty of challenges, but thankfully there are a ton of safety products devoted solely to the health and safety of outdoor workers on a hot work site. And there are countless resources to help you deal with the hazards that the hot weather has to offer.
- OSHA has a comprehensive section on its website devoted to the Prevention of Occupational Heat Exposure. It features short tips in the areas of Engineering Controls, Work Practices, PPE and Training. OSHA also includes the Water•Rest•Shade campaign, and downloadable Heat Stress Resources for your employees.
- NIOSH has a large portion of the website devoted to Heat Stress. NIOSH also offers a convenient Fast Facts sheet that can be conveniently hung up on a work site. Download a PDF of the Fact Sheet here.
- If you don’t like the official way that government agencies word heat stress tips, check out this excellent article from EHS Today. The first two paragraphs are all it takes to drive home just how important things like cooling, rest and hydration are.
- The National Weather Service provides an in-depth look at how the heat index works and the dangers exposure to heat can cause. Their approach applies to everyone, not just outdoor workers, and they provide plenty of valuable information.
It doesn’t really matter where you get your info from. A long form white paper or a simple chart are equally informative. Choose the one that works best for you. The important thing is to know how serious the dangers of heat stress can be. Workers and foremen need to be aware that the summer sun and the heat it brings change how you operate on the job site. Staying informed is the best way to beat heat stress.
Mallory Safety & Supply features heat stress prevention products from Ergodyne, Occunomix as well as high visibility hydration packs from Vinatronics. Ergodyne has a complete program for heat stress featuring hydration packs (Water), Shax high visibility rest tents (Rest and Shade) and cooling banadanas, beanies, evaporative cooling vests, sweatbands, wrist sweatbands and neckbands. When it comes to heat stress and protecting your workers, Mallory Safety & Supply has it all.
We at eSafetyStore.com and ColdWeatherWorkwear.com have to admit that we kind of like big snowstorms and winter weather because it gives us a chance to outfit outdoor workers in winter safety gear. And when its icy outside ice cleats and other traction devices are important pieces of safety equipment.
It’s a good idea to keep in mind where you’ll be using an ice traction device before choosing one. They’re not all identical.
Ice cleats that use tungsten or steel spikes provide excellent traction on ice and snow. But they aren’t the best choice for workers who frequently head indoors. The spikes can damage carpet and flooring, and can slide on dry and smooth concrete floors.
The Yaktrax Walker is made from pliable rubber, and employs metal coils to grip the snow. These spring-like coils won’t harm floors like spikes can. Yaktrax ice traction devices are easy to put on over workboots and shoes and are extremely effective on even the most dangerous surfaces. Plus, they’re lightweight and can be easily stored in a glove compartment or on a coat rack until they’re needed.
One of the newer additions to our line of ice cleats are the Ergodyne Trex Heel Cleats. These have steel plates on both heels, but not cleats covering the rest of the shoe. The cleats provide excellent traction but don’t hamper the use of pedals when driving a truck, forklife, or other work vehicle.
You’ve got choices when it comes to ice traction outsoles. Just make sure that you get some, because I’m guessing that the snow and ice isn’t done yet. It just might be a slippery March.
The importance of wearing effective eye protection becomes decidedly more tangible when you hear true stories of those who have been affected by a serious eye injury.
Edge Safety Eyewear created a powerful video that tells the story of an 11-year-old boy injured when an Airsoft pellet gun accidently discharged. It shows the effect of the injury, and accentuates how important eye safety really is. The safety video also shows, in slow motion, how rugged Edge Eyewear is able to withstand the impact from a pellet traveling over 500 feet per second.
We at eSafetyStore have been big fans of Edge safety products for a few years now, and we carry a full line of Edge Eyewear that includes safety glasses and protective safety goggles. They entire line is extremely durable and also very stylish.
Edge has a variety of eyeglass styles, and they also have Vapor Shield, a military-grade antifog coating. Plenty of safety eyewear companies falsely claim to have antifog glasses, but the Edge Dakura with Vapor Shield, truly is antifog.
The bottom line is that you can trust your eyes to Edge Safety Eyewear.
Not Too Hot, Not Too Cold, Just Right!
When the seasons change, you can get caught between fall and winter. It’s not really cold enough for a heavy parka, yet it can be cold and drizzley enough to need some kind of jacket – one that’s not too hot and not too cold. A jacket that’s just right.
Well, we’ve got just the jacket for you. This lightweight ANSI Class 3 Soft-Shell Jacket from OccuNomix’s Speed Collection® is waterproof and fleece lined, perfect for keeping you warm and dry on those chilly and damp late-fall days. And man, is it cool looking!
Perfect for Motorcyclists
For starters, it’s fully ANSI Class 3 compliant: bright fluorescent yellow with 2″ silver stripes made of 3M™ Scotchlite™ material, among the most highly reflective materials on the market today. Two horizontal stripes completely encircle the torso, and two stripes encircle each sleeve, so you can be confident that other motorists are going to see you coming, especially at night.
The outer shell is made of 100% polyester high-stretch fabric with a water-repellent finish. The inner core is made of a waterproof but breathable polyurethane laminate hydrophilic film. The polyurethane keeps the rain out, and the hydrophilic film wicks moisture away from your body to make sure you stay dry. And of course, the fleece lining keeps you nice and warm.
• There are two front “slash” pockets, one on each side.
• There is a cell phone pocket on the sleeve with a zipper closure to make sure you don’t lose your phone.
More Great Features
• The front zipper closure and the zippered sleeve pocket use YKK® Zippers – the best in the world.
• Adjustable sleeve cuffs tighten down to keep wind and rain out.
• Adjustable waist has an elastic pull cord with a spring-loaded stopper. Pull it tight for a warm, snug fit.

With Edge Eyewear, You Get What You Pay For
It’s an old expression, isn’t it? “You get what you pay for.” It can be used to imply that when you buy cheap stuff, you get poor quality. But it can also be used to mean just the opposite. Usually, when you pay more, you get more. There is sound reasoning behind this idea. It costs more to design and manufacture a high-quality product, and those costs have to be passed along to the consumer in the form of higher prices. But a smart, well-informed consumer knows that, in the long run, you’ll be better off paying a little more up front to get a high-quality product that will perform at a high level, and will continue to do so for many years. High quality is a good investment.
Unique Features of Edge Eyewear
All Edge Safety Glasses share the same great features: straight temples that don’t pinch, fog-resistant and scratch-resistant polycarbonate lenses that block 99.9% of harmful UVA, UVB and UVC rays, and wraparound frames made of a flexible and durable TR90/Nylon compound. The temple tips and nose pads are covered with TPR, a material that actually increases its grip as it becomes moist or warm, so your safety glasses won’t slide off your nose under hot, sweaty conditions
The people at Edge Eyewear are dedicated to creating safety eyewear of the very highest quality possible. Of course, all Edge Safety Glasses are compliant with the ANSI Z87.1+2010 standards, but they also meet U.S. Military Eyewear Ballistic Impact Resistance Requirements (MIL-PRF 31013 clause 126.96.36.199, MIL-V-43511 clause 3.5.10.)
Did you just glaze over at all the military legalese? Yeah, me too. But here’s what it means. It means that you can shoot a ¼” diameter steel ball, travelling at 660 feet per second, at a pair of Edge Safety Glasses, and the steel ball will not penetrate the eyewear and hit a person in the eye. The frame will remain intact, and the safety lenses will remain unbroken and firmly retained in the frame. That’s pretty convincing evidence that Edge Safety Eyewear will protect your eyes. And you can believe it, because all Edge Eyewear is tested by independent, ANSI-accredited laboratories.
But that’s just the beginning of the story. Edge has engineered their lenses to far exceed ANSI standards for definition clarity, effectively creating “high-definition” lenses in every pair of safety glasses they make. In fact, Edge lenses offer twice the resolution of ordinary safety lenses, and the result is clearer vision and the capability of seeing much finer detail.
The Manipulation of Light
Let’s talk about lenses. Edge offers a choice of high-tech lenses that is unrivaled in the industry. Polarized lenses that eliminate glare. Silver mirror lenses that reflect more light, ideal for bright-light conditions. Lenses with an anti-fog coating that truly repels fog and steam – moisture literally rolls off the lens, maintaining clear vision at all times.
But how about Edge’s Blue Light Filter Lens? It turns out that blue light has a shorter wave length than other light, and when it enters your eye, it focuses too far in front of your retina, causing a blue blur that reduces sharpness of focus and causes eyestrain. But this lens filters out the right amount of blue light, resulting in brighter, sharper vision and greater depth perception - a first for safety glasses.
Here’s another fantastic high-tech lens offered by Edge – the G-15 Lens, first engineered by the U.S. Air Force. The G-15 lens maximizes the transmission of green and yellow light. The result: contrast and image definition are boosted, even in low-light conditions. The G-15 lens also creates a noticeable cooling sensation on the eyes for greater comfort. Edge Eyewear was the first company ever to offer a G-15 lens in safety eyewear.
Here’s one more lens from Edge that manipulates the transmission of light – the Aqua Precision Lens. The Aqua Precision coating was first developed by NASA for astronaut helmet visors and spacecraft windows.
The Aqua Precision lens effectively blocks the transmission of infrared light while greatly reducing excess blue and red light at opposite ends of the spectrum. The result is greater contrast and clarity, especially in the brightest light conditions. Hey, astronaut helmet visors! Pretty cool, huh? And again, Edge Eyewear was the first company ever to offer the Aqua Precision lens coating.

But all this technology would be meaningless without great styling. People care about how they look, and if the glasses are ugly or out of style, few people will wear them, regardless of how fantastic the technology is. The folks at Edge Eyewear recognize this, and they have spent as much time and energy creating great-looking eyewear as they have on the science of light transmission.
I can’t begin to describe all the great styles in eyewear design available from Edge Eyewear here in this blog. But I invite you to visit eSafetyStore.com to check out the Full Line of Fabulous Edge Eyewear. Click Here to go directly to the Edge Eyewear section of eSafetyStore.
Let’s Wrap This Up
So what are we talking about here? We’re talking about the wisdom of a willingness to pay more to get the very best. We’re talking about getting what you pay for. Edge Eyewear may cost more than other brands, but what price do you put on your vision? Is it smart to buy cheap safety glasses that will fail when you need them most, when your vision is threatened? Or do you want to invest in eyewear that will protect your eyes in the most dangerous situations, eyewear that offers breakthrough technologies in lens science, eyewear that offers cutting-edge design in styling that will set you apart from ordinary workers, designs that will allow you to make a statement about who you are and what you believe in.
In the end, I guess that’s up to you.
Lacrosse® Utah Brogue Premium Rubber Overshoes with Chevron Soles
Winter’s coming. All that slush and snow and ice are determined to ruin your best shoes.
Protect your shoes with Utah Brogue Premium Rubber Overshoes from Lacrosse, on sale now at a great price at eSafetyStore.com!
Utah Brogue Overshoes are made of ZXT™ ozone/tear-resistant premium rubber, which won’t tear, rip out or degrade. They’re highly flexible and feature a nylon net lining, so they slip on easily and provide 100% waterproof protection for your shoes.
Ordinary overshoes sometimes aren’t tall enough, so slush can splash over the tops and get down inside your shoes. I hate that! But Utah Brogues are a full 14″ tall, so they’ll keep slush from coming in over the top and getting down inside your shoes. In fact, you can wade through water a foot deep and not get your feet wet!
A diamond cleated chevron outsole provides excellent traction on slippery surfaces, or walking through deep snow. Put your pantlegs down into the overshoes, then use the adjustable top strap to snug up the top of the overshoe to protect the bottom 14″ of your pants. That’s a good idea!

Warm winter gloves are as important as good warm winter footwear when it comes to outdoor work. Think about it…once those fingers get cold you’re absolutely miserable and those digits take a long time to warm back up. And if your fingers get both cold and wet on the jobsite because your winter work gloves stink, well, you might as well pack up and go home.
Black Stallion Fuzzy Hand Max2 Gloves make sure that cold and wet never happen. That’s because the gloves feature a waterproof inner barrier lining, which keeps dampness from snow or rain on the outside of the glove. The back of the glove is made from a soft polar fleece that feels like a Snuggie for your hand. Seriously, the fleece back is so soft and warm that you’ll want to wear the gloves every day. (Honestly, the awesome polar fleece is loved by everyone here at eSafetyStore.)
The waterproof lining and soft polar fleece back make the Fuzzy Hand Max2 a great winter glove, but wait…there’s more. The premium grain pigskin palm is soft but extremely durable, and it features PVC grip patches on the palm and fingertips. A storm cuff keeps out bad things like wind and snow. And MultiBlend insulation is the proverbial icing on the cake, it ensures warmth for those valuable fingers of yours.
Winter workwear isn’t really worth wearing if it doesn’t keep you warm. Put on a pair of Black Stallion Fuzzy Hand winter gloves before you head to your next jobsite and we think your hands will be just fine.
